The Splendid and the Vile | What if the world needs exactly what makes you different?

The year is 1940, Great Britain is at war, and a new leader is needed.

In the book The Splendid and the Vile, Winston Churchill rises to become prime minister of Britain. But Churchill does not fit the expected mold of prime ministers that preceded him. Bold, brash and eccentric his reputation has led to a great deal of skepticism about this person now placed in charge.

His colleagues and enemies don’t know how to deal with him. And yet he is able to galvanize those around him and confound those against him. It's a good example of a leader that might be considered difficult during ordinary times… but is exactly what is needed during extraordinary times.

We don’t know when we’ll get the call. Or when our particular approach may be exactly what the moment needs. Some traits that create friction in one context can become assets in another.

So perhaps the things that make us different aren’t always things we need to smooth away. Developing them, understanding them, and learning when and how to use them may prepare us for a moment we can’t yet see.
