Mysteries routinely drive me crazy. The mystery of my missing bandana or who stole my fish while I was busy chasing humans away? Those may never be solved. And honestly, the stress of unraveling a mystery alone could leave anyone out of sorts.
Fortunately, in the two films I’ve chosen this week, our heroes don’t face the puzzle alone.
In The Thin Man, Nick and Nora are partners in every sense—marriage, martinis, and mystery. Their joy for life carries them through the initial shock of the crime and fuels their playful sleuthing as they work their way through suspects to uncover the truth.
In Topper, help comes from a very different source: ghosts. Poor Topper is reluctant, confused, and constantly out of his depth, but the spirited insistence of his ghostly companions keeps him moving forward. His bafflement, combined with their antics, makes for plenty of laughs along the way.
Walking away from both films, I know I’d welcome the help of Nick and Nora—or even a couple of persistent ghosts. As for Topper, he might prefer to stay home, but watching him sweat through the chaos is part of the fun.

I’ve also been tinkering with a little recording device I… ahem… happened to find in an abandoned tent. With any luck, that means I’ll soon be sharing video reviews as well. Consider it another mystery worth tuning in for—what could possibly go wrong when I get my paws on new gadgets?
