Now it’s your turn →Our social circles are familiar to us. We have cultivated them, and they have evolved over time. The familiar is warm and comfortable…a place where we can support and feel supported. This is a good place to be, and that core sense of validation can be ever-present.
But are you ready for a fresh perspective?
Perhaps you’re feeling like your personal growth has plateaued. What once felt cozy now feels predictable, and a voice inside is asking what’s next. Have you considered looking outside of your current friend group?
In E.T., a lonely boy named Elliott meets an alien stranded far from home. He brings E.T. into his world—introducing him to his brother and sister—and together they protect his secret.
Elliott begins this story alone, gripped by fear and uncertainty. But instead of retreating inward, he steps out of his comfort zone. He takes a chance on a friendship that is, quite literally, alien.
What Elliott recognizes in E.T.,and what allows the connection to form, are shared values: compassion, curiosity, and kindness.
Stepping outside our usual circles can feel risky. It requires a bold move…leaving the comfort of the known and engaging with something unfamiliar. A critical step is identifying shared values, just as Elliott does with E.T. After the initial fear and trepidation, he recognizes something familiar that he can work with: care and compassion, demonstrated by E.T. and shared by Elliott.
These are core values. Without them, there is nothing to build on.
The next step is making the first move and reaching out. When that outreach is reciprocated in a respectful way, the groundwork is laid for connection. And perhaps this new dynamic brings a much-needed fresh perspective into an already familiar circle.
When we choose a connection rooted in empathy and mutual respect, something shifts. Our world expands.
In E.T., trust grows because care is returned. Elliott protects E.T., and E.T. protects Elliott. Each brings out the best in the other.
The lesson is not simply to seek more friends…but identify the right ones. Connections that align with our core values. Relationships that lift us up and help us grow into who we’re capable of becoming.
