Reflections on the deeper meaning behind the films we watch.
Retired marshall Will Kane is preparing to leave the small town, with his new bride, when he learns that a former criminal Frank Miller has released and is returning for revenge. Kane begins recruiting deputies to defend the town…but one by one, the townspeople refuse. Some are afraid. Some are indifferent. Some would rather not get involved
And so he is left to face the threat alone
Facing a challenge alone can be daunting. We look for allies and come up short..or worse, we find reasons to run. Especially when the cause benefits others, and walking away would leave them exposed.
In High Noon, Kane has every reason to leave. His duty is done. His life is beginning anew. He could disappear into comfort and safety.
Instead, he stays.
Why continue when the cost is so high and the support so low?
Why not move on, start fresh, and never look back.
Because the world we live in is one we actively build.
It is not built passively.
It is not built without challenge.
And it is rarely built without resistance.
Sometimes it takes the vision of one person, and the willingness to stand alone, to hold a line long enough for others to remember who they are.
Allies may eventually form. Sometimes it only takes one or two.
But people need examples. Examples of those willing to stand, protect the vulnerable, and act when it would be easier not to.
We all have moments when we are called to rise.
The call rarely comes with applause.
It usually comes with hesitation and resistance.
And when the question is “Why?”
Perhaps the most powerful response is, “Why not?”
